Training Sandy: One Paw at a Time

Training Sandy: One Paw at a Time

Welcoming Sandy, a guide dog-in-training, to our home was more than just puppy fun and cuddles. Sandy has a job to do, and so do I. During her time with me, Sandy learned important commands like "sit," "come," and "on the bed." These simple lessons are basic building blocks for the work that she will do one day, which is guiding someone who is visually impaired with confidence and care.

It took patience to repeat training with Sandy, as we all know that puppies aren't that obedient; communication to build up our trust and understanding; and compassion to encourage and support her through all of her successes and setbacks. These values not only helped Sandy's continued improvement in becoming a guide dog, but my own growth and learning, too.

I may never meet the person that Sandy will one day assist, but knowing that I played a small part in their journey together makes it worth it. Sometimes, the most powerful way to help others is to just show up and let love lead the way.
